Define or Understand The Task

What do I have to do? The following are questions to answer before you proceed with your research:

  • What is the purpose of this task?
  • What are my instructions?
  • What are the main sections of the task?
  • What are the expectations?
  • What are the important parts of the topic? What subheadings could I use?
  • What types of information are relevant and how much do I need to thoroughly cover the topic?
  • What are the key words and terms I can use to find information?
  • What should my plan of attack be?

The DEFINING step - some strategies:

  • Use dictionaries to define the terms used in the assignment instructions.
  • Start to write down 'keywords' - the words you discover during your research which relate closely to your topic and can be used to search for information about the various aspects of the topic.
  • Start to make a plan or task scaffold which shows the important parts of the topic. Improve your plan as you progress with the assignment and understand more about the topic.
