Purpose of
this assignment:
Overcoming
difficulties in life usually requires inner strength that people initially do
not realise they possess. Students will gain an understanding of the challenges
that 2 people are forced to face and the ways they are able to overcome their
same adversity.

Task:
Students are to research then compare and contrast 2 examples of
individuals overcoming adversity and present their findings to the class as a 4-page information
summary and 2-minute speech delivered without the use of notes.

PLANNING SECTION
Define the Task
Students are to
research 2 persons with the same disability who have faced a great personal
challenge and have overcome the adversity. For example: Dragons Abreast, Aaron
Ralston and Delta Goodrem. You can choose a local person, someone who has been
in the media or someone you have read about.
Present a 4 page
summary and a 2 minute presentation to class without the use of notes on your
chosen example that covers the following:
Who
the persons are.
The
nature of the challenges they face.
Some
of the issues associated with those challenges.
How
they were able to overcome the challenges and deal with the issues.
Their
current situations.
Students should
use the Library to consult information books, biographies, newspapers and
magazines (use Electric Library) and the Internet. You can also use videos and
interviews on programs such as Australian Story.
Collect textual
information with supporting images, interviews or video segments.
Organise your
information logically according to the sections outlined in the task details
above.
Create and Present
Your summary
should be a concise account of the key findings from your research. The
presentation can include a variety of media, for example: PowerPoint,
overheads, selections from interviews, excerpts from books and video segments.

Students to make
sure they cover all areas set out in Define the Task. Use the guidelines below
to help you to achieve a result in the higher performance bands.
