Purpose of
this assignment
To assess the
influence of historical, cultural and contemporary perspectives on textile
design and to further explore the textiles industry.

Task
Compare clothing
designs from different eras to find trends that have been repeated.
Research an
Australian designer who has used styles from another era or culture in their
work and analyse one design in terms of functional and aesthetic design. Name
the activities carried out in each sector of the Australian textiles industry
and explore one career opportunity within it.
PLANNING SECTION
Define the Task
Part A
Find a picture
of one design feature from a different era. For example it may be an
entire outfit, or a dress, skirt, shirt or pants style. Find another picture
later in history (or contemporary) that uses the same style. Glue it in next to
the original picture.
Label the
diagrams as follows:

The
pair of pictures should be labelled so that the feature being compared
is obvious.

You
should also label the year that the item was worn both the first and second
times.
·
Comment
on how the feature has changed the second time it featured, eg. different fabric
- be specific.

Part B
You are to
research a contemporary Australian fashion designer. Choose a designer that has
used inspiration from another era or culture in their work.

Name
the designer. /1

Discuss
the way they have used inspiration from another era or culture (eg. 1920s, pirates,
gypsies) in their designs.
¨
Find
1 picture of their recent work and explain how another culture or era has been
used as inspiration. That is, label the features that are linked to another era
or culture.
¨
Choose
one of the designer’s works and analyse the design in terms of functional and
aesthetic design. Include a picture of the design in your answer. Write about
at least 8 different functional or aesthetic design features.

Part C
Explore one
career opportunity available within the textile industry. State training
required, a job description and probable pay scale.

Part D
Include a
bibliography. Use the ‘assignment assistance’ link on Library web page to write
up the bibliography correctly.

Locate Information
Students should
use the following sources to find information and ideas – reference books,
information books – especially the history of fashion books on the 391 shelves
and the fashion design books on the 746 shelves, newspapers, magazines, pattern
envelopes, Internet – especially the Board of Studies web site.

completed on plain paper, stapled and put in a plastic slip for marking. An
