Purpose of
this Assignment:
In
this unit, you have studied the techniques for successful formal speaking. The
purpose of this assignment is to assess how well you can communicate orally.
Task:
Prepare and
present a three-minute speech on an issue to be arranged with your teacher.
Brainstorming,
rough drafts and editing of your speech must appear in your workbook. Teachers
will be monitoring the process of your speech writing.

Planner
Choose a topic. This must be
negotiated with your teacher. You will be given 4 lessons to prepare in class
during Week 8. Two of these lessons may be Library lessons, at the discretion
of your teacher.
1. Define
Define
the topic. Decide on the key points to be discussed in your speech.
2. Locate
Revise
information you have been given about techniques for effective formal speaking.
3. Create
Brainstorm
as many ideas and examples as you can.
4. Locate
If
necessary, research facts, figures, quotations and further examples that can be
used to support your arguments. Remember the best material is interesting and
relevant.
5. Create
and Organise
Write
a first draft of your speech. Be sure to include an appropriate
greeting/introduction, and conclusion.
6. Organise
Present
your individual speech to another student. They should comment on strengths and
weaknesses of your speech, and suggest ways in which to improve your
presentation. Avoid repetition in your speeches and share useful information.
Then you need to listen to their speech. Make sure that your speech falls
within the acceptable time limits.
7. Organise
Reduce
your speech to points on palm cards.
Ensure
these cards are legible.
Rehearse
your speech and ensure that your manner is correct.
8. Present
Be
on time with all the materials you will need on the day.
Present
your speech to the audience.
9. Evaluation
Write
a 150-250 word reflection on how effectively you prepared and presented your
speech. This is due two days after your presentation and will form part of the
assessment.

Content: substance, reference material, fluency of ideas,
originality and organisation.

Length of speech.

Physical presentation: appearance, posture, eye contact, use
of palm cards, body language.
