Individual Research Study & Presentation

 

 

Length: Double sided A4 sheet. Oral presentation: 3 minutes minimum, 5 minutes maximum.

 

Marks / Value: 20% of yearly mark.

 

Date Due: A4 sheet due and presentations begin Monday 5th May, 2008. Term 2, Week 2.

Information already provided in class is NOT to be used as part of the group assignment.

Provide a copy of your double-sided A4 report for each student in the class.

 

Purpose of this assignment

This task expands on the information provided in class and provides a more in-depth coverage of the 1 topic in ‘Issues in Sport’. Students will gain experience in researching, analysing and manipulating current information for a polished classroom presentation.

 

Outcomes Assessed

2.1   Discusses the nature and impact of historical and contemporary issues in physical activity and sport.

2.2   Analyses physical activity and sport from personal, social and cultural perspectives.

4.4   Analyses and appraises information, opinions and observations to inform physical activity and sport decisions.

 

Task

Research one of the 6 topic areas listed below and provide a handout for all students in the class that gives a detailed overview of your chosen topic. Give a 3-5 minute oral presentation to the class about your topic. You must outline the positive and negative effects of the issue relating to spectators, athletes and society in general.

 

 

ASSIGNMENT DETAILS

 

Define the Task

 

Choose 1 of the 6 topic areas listed below to study.

 

1.       Research the general topic in detail and then consider specific current issues related to the topic.

2.       Recent information and research on your topic and its associated issues will be very useful. Include current opinions about your topic and information about the opportunities that exist within it.

3.       Outline the positive and negative effects of the issue relating to spectators, athletes and society in general.

 

YOU MUST USE CURRENT EXAMPLES IN YOUR PRESENTATION.

 

Also include ideas about any interaction that exists between your topic and the other topic areas listed below.

Locate Information

Information can be found in the Library in the Issues in Society section and the Non-Fiction section – especially the 796 shelves. Use Electric Library to find newspaper and journal articles. The Internet will be helpful - some websites are listed below. Local Agencies, Department of Sport and Recreation, Australian Drug Foundation, Sports Council, etc. will also be useful.

 

Select and Analyse

Make notes that record relevant information from at least three information sources. Highlight the relevant parts of photocopies or printouts that you produce. Collect information in the form of text, pictures, diagrams, flow charts, statistics, tables, video etc., as relevant.

 

Organise and Synthesise

Break your topic into logical parts and use headings and subheadings to organise your information. For each part, combine the information you have selected from the different sources you used into points, so that you fully explain that part. Arrange your parts in a logical, interesting way. Make sure you have relevant diagrams, visual aids etc. for each part.

 

Create and Present

Make your double A4 overview handout concise, but thorough.

- Make regular references to your handout during the oral presentation.

- Include a comprehensive bibliography separate to the A4 sheet.

- Give your presentation a professional look.

 

Evaluate and Reflect

A good assignment will be well researched, creative, interesting and highly informative.

 

Marking Guidelines

10 marks allocated for the content and presentation of the double-sided A4 handout.

10 marks allocated to the speech - More detailed and specific than your handout.

 

Advanced

19 – 20 marks

 

·         A very detailed account of the chosen issue.

·         Researched thoroughly, with information about current developments.

·         Information has been analysed and evaluated.

·         Displays a sound understanding of the interactive nature of the topic areas.

·         Class presentation is lively, interesting and very informative.

 

Highly Competent

16 –18 marks

 

·         A detailed account of the chosen issue.

·         Researched thoroughly, with information about current developments.

·         Evidence of analysis and evaluation of information.

·         Displays an understanding of the interactive nature of the topic areas.

·         Class presentation is interesting and informative.

 

Competent

12 – 15 marks

 

·         A reasonably thorough account of the chosen issue.

·         Researched from at least 3 resources, with information about a current development.

·         An attempt at analysis and evaluation of information.

·         Displays an understanding of some interaction between the topic areas.

·         Class presentation is interesting and informative.

 

Developing

6 – 11 marks

 

·         A basic account of the chosen issue.

·         Researched from at least 2 resources, with some information about a current development.

·         Description rather than analysis and evaluation of information.

·         Little understanding of the interaction between the topic areas.

·         Some attempt to make the class presentation interesting and informative.
