Coffs Harbour Educator Awarded NSW AFL Teacher of the Year

COFFS HARBOUR, NSW — Bishop Druitt College is celebrating after Head of Sport, Kellie Reinhold, was named the New South Wales state winner for the AFL Schools Teacher of the Year category in the Toyota National Volunteer Awards.

Recognised for her long-standing service, community leadership, and commitment to growing Australian Rules Football across the Coffs Coast, Reinhold was surprised with the state title before students and colleagues.

The state victory officially places Reinhold into the national finalist pool, competing against state winners from across Australia. The national winner will be selected by the AFL later this season and awarded a trip to the 2026 AFL Grand Final.

AFL Participation Lead for Northern NSW, Matt Crawley, said presenting the award to Reinhold was a highlight for the region.

"It was fantastic to present this award to Kellie," Mr Crawley said. "She has been a long-time supporter of AFL at BDC across both the primary and secondary schools. Whether running school competitions, running development programs, or simply encouraging kids to give footy a go, Kellie is a passionate advocate for sport on the Coffs Coast."

"With a great team behind her, Kellie’s leadership and clear communication make working alongside BDC seamless. She is an incredibly deserving state winner."

Reflecting on the achievement, Reinhold credited the broader school community for supporting sports participation.

"It’s humbling to be nominated, let alone win," Ms Reinhold said. "Making school sport happen—and AFL in particular—is always a team effort. My focus is simply on creating opportunities for students, whether that’s helping someone pick up a football for the first time or helping experienced players build their skills and passion."

"The AFL does a brilliant job making grassroots programs accessible for schools. At the end of the day, it’s all about working together so young people can get out there, have a go, and enjoy playing."

Bishop Druitt College Principal, Simon Doyle, said the state title highlights the vital role teachers play in community sport.

"This award is a fantastic acknowledgement of Kellie, our Head of Sport, who puts in the hours every day to encourage students into sport and lead active lifestyles for fun, and this is what our local AFL partnership excels at with Matt Crawley," Mr Doyle said. "School sport relies entirely on educators and parents who give up their time, coach during lunch breaks, manage logistics, and build a positive environment where every student feels supported."

The AFL Schools Awards recognise educators who deliver engaging football programs, encourage healthy lifestyles, and build strong pathways from school sport to local community clubs.

Following her state win, the college now awaits the AFL's national award announcement later this term.
