Chaplain's Chat 2026 Term 2 Week 4
By Rev Lisa Williamson, BDC School Chaplain
Pentecost: Growth and Change
As the seasons turn, and autumn brings refreshing rain and cooler nights, we have also entered a season of renewal and transformation in our yearly rhythm of worship. Last term, we came together to re-tell the ancient story of Holy Week and Easter, and to celebrate the new hope we have in the resurrection of Jesus. While those celebrations may feel like they are behind us, Easter is really only the beginning. Now, we stand on the threshold of Pentecost, a time when we celebrate the "birthday" of the Church and the incredible power of the Holy Spirit to bring change and growth.
From a Spark to a Flame
After the first Easter, Jesus’ disciples found themselves in a period of waiting. They had witnessed something incredible - but they weren't yet sure how to share it with the world. Like a sudden wind or a dancing flame, the Holy Spirit arrived to give God’s people the courage to speak, the heart to love, and the gifts they needed to share a story of joy that has lasted over two thousand years.
Throughout history, this same Spirit has pushed the church to grow and adapt. Just as our students grow out of their uniforms or move from learning their ABCs to analyzing complex literature, the community of faith has constantly changed to meet the needs of a changing world. This term in chapel, primary students will be reflecting on the Christian community we belong to, bringing us into fellowship with God’s people in every time and place.
The Transformation of St. Paul
Our Secondary students will be focussing on an individual story of transformation - the story of St Paul. In his early life, Paul worked against the early Christians, participating in violent persecution. However, through a powerful encounter with Jesus, he experienced a complete change of heart, mind, and spirit. He went on to become a leader in the early church, teaching, inspiring, and transforming Christian communities. His teaching is still shaping churches today, through the inclusion of a number of his writings in the New Testament.
The life of St Paul reminds us that no one is ever "stuck" as they are. With the help of the Holy Spirit, and the support of a community shaped by grace and hope, Paul was able to grow into the person God was calling him to be. This term we will be inviting students to reflect on how we can create space for growth and change within our own hearts, relationships, and of course our school community.
Let’s Celebrate!
Pentecost isn’t just an ancient story; it is a living reality in our classrooms and playgrounds today. The Holy Spirit is that "quiet nudge" that inspires us to be our best selves. The Spirit enables us to discover capacities we didn't know we had, and gives us the strength to change habits that hold us back. Whether you are in Kindergarten or Year 12, this season invites you to ask: “How can I grow today?”
We would love for our families and the wider community to join us as we celebrate this vibrant season of growth and Spirit. Please mark your calendars for our upcoming Pentecost liturgies:
- Primary Celebration: Thursday, 21st May at 2:20pm
- Secondary Celebration: Friday, 22nd May at 8:40am
Blessings to you and yours,
