Alumni News: Dominic Jones

Dominic Jones attended Bishop Druitt College from 2009 to 2016. He demonstrated academic excellence throughout his secondary schooling, being awarded Dux in Years 7, 9, 10 and 11. Dominic also achieved the prestigious honour of being Dux of Bishop Druitt College for his HSC results in 2016. Furthermore, he was named by the Board of Studies as a ‘Top Achiever’ in both the 2 Unit HSC Chemistry and Physics courses, placing 8th in the state in Physics and 19th in the state in Chemistry.
Dominic was sure to go places, and he has not disappointed.
After finishing his HSC, Dominic moved to Sydney and studied a double degree, majoring in Physics and Politics at UNSW. He lived mostly around Maroubra and kept in touch with many other BDC alumni while studying. He graduated in 2021 and then spent a year working as a casual academic in the UNSW School of Physics and completing a bit of well earned travelling.
In 2023, Dominic moved to Melbourne to work for Grattan Institute. The institute, established in 2008, produces high quality recommendations for Australia’s future. Its independent research has helped shape the Australian policy conversation, from childcare policy to the COVID 19 response. At Grattan, he first worked on health policy, looking at shortages in specialist medical care, and then in the Climate Change and Energy team, focusing on the electricity system and the green transition. He loved living in Melbourne and was lucky to have many BDC friends already living there, which provided him with valuable social connections in his new city.
In 2025, Dominic moved to Barcelona with his partner, Rachael, to study a Master’s degree in Economics. His goal was to learn skills that would help him contribute to Australian public policy when he returns home in the future. In a couple of months, he will move to London to work as a Research Economist at the London School of Economics. This role will involve analysing wealth and income inequality, as well as the economics of taxation.
