Alumni Spotlight: Empowering Students Through Fitness & Focus
By By Ethan Robertson (BDC Alumnus)
During my high school years, I realised early on that traditional classroom environments weren't where I thrived best. Like many teenagers, I often found it challenging to stay engaged, maintain focus, and find my groove academically. Ultimately, I decided to complete Year 10 and step into practical vocational pathways.
After leaving school, I enrolled in a certificate program through Key Employment to build my credentials. During this transition period, I struggled with low confidence and felt uncertain about where my path was leading. I knew I had potential, but I hadn't yet found the right outlet to unleash it.
The Breakthrough
Everything shifted when my brother-in-law introduced me to group functional fitness—working with barbells, battle ropes, and box jumps.
For the first time, I found a medium where effort directly translated to progress:
- Confidence & Community: A supportive environment where I felt motivated and welcomed.
- Measurable Progress: A physical outlet that allowed me to set personal goals and achieve them daily.
- Holistic Growth: A foundation that dramatically improved my mental focus, physical strength, and social connection.
The positive transformation in my life didn't go unnoticed. In fact, a teacher from BDC who knew my journey reached out with an inspiring idea: Why not take what you've learned and mentor current students who learn better through movement?
Focus First Fitness: Supporting Years 7–10
That encouragement from the BDC community sparked the creation of Focus First Fitness, an initiative designed specifically to help students in Years 7–10 build self-esteem, resilience, and focus.
Focus First Fitness offers tailored 1-on-1 personal training centred entirely around the student's personal interests:
- Customised Mentorship: Whether it's building strength in a structured workout or tossing a ball around while chatting through life and school challenges.
- Positive Reinforcement: A reliable space focused on incremental wins, personal progress, and self-belief.
- A Supportive Space: Helping students discover that confidence built outside the classroom often translates to greater focus inside it.
To our BDC parents and community: every student's journey is unique. If your young person could benefit from an active, positive outlet to build their self-esteem and focus, I would love to support them.
