Building Pathways for Regional Excellence Starts With Partnerships Within Our Own Communities
By Natalie Titcume, Head of High Performance & Sports Academies
Over the past seven years living and working regionally, one thing has become abundantly clear to me — the commitment and sacrifice made by regional student-athletes and their families is absolutely extraordinary.
From the very first day I arrived at Bishop Druitt College, the talent across our region immediately stood out. Whether it was on the athletics track, football field, basketball court, AFL oval or in the gym, the quality of athletes coming through our programs continually impressed me. But it was the stories behind the performances that truly stayed with me.
The late-night drives to Sydney.
The missed family weekends.
The financial sacrifices.
The endless kilometres travelled simply for an opportunity to be seen.
Too often, regional athletes have historically been viewed as “country kids” — talented, hardworking, but somehow still overlooked when standing beside metropolitan athletes from “the big smoke”. That mindset is something I have always wanted to challenge and change through our High Performance Program at BDC.
Today, we are starting to see that shift happen.
Recent graduates like Daniel Williams continue to show what regional athletes are capable of on the world stage. Daniel’s journey from BDC to competing at the U20 World Athletics Championships and now heading to Penn State University in the United States is a powerful example of what can happen when talent meets opportunity.
Likewise, our own Amaia Wain recently made history by being selected at Pick #4 in the AFLW National Draft by the Western Bulldogs — an incredible achievement not only for Amaia and her family, but for regional athletes everywhere. Her journey sends a clear message across the state and nation:
Regional athletes are here to compete.
Regional athletes deserve recognition.
Regional athletes belong on the biggest stages.
That is why partnerships such as our new collaboration with McGrath Estate Agents are so important.

This partnership is far more than sponsorship signage or branding. It represents genuine investment into the future of regional student-athletes and their families. Through this initiative, funds generated through community support will directly assist in creating opportunities for individual athletes and the wider program — helping with travel, tours, competitions, camps and athlete development experiences.
Families and community members can support the initiative by scanning the QR code to access the McGrath Community Sponsorship Nomination Form and following the prompts. Entering the site this way automatically lets McGrath know that you have come through the BDC partnership link. From there, you simply continue through the process as normal whether you are looking to buy, sell or manage a property. Every referral then directly supports our BDC Community — from grassroots sport within the Barracudas Sporting Club through to our High Performance student-athletes and their families.

Combined with the ongoing support from Hoys Health & Wellness through our annual Gold Coast High Performance Camp and continued upgrades to our gym and training facilities, these partnerships are helping create pathways that previously may not have existed for many regional families.
What excites me most is that we are only just getting started.
At BDC, we are building a culture where hard work, resilience and regional pride are becoming recognised strengths — not limitations. Our students are beginning to realise they no longer have to leave their identity behind to compete with the best. They can come from regional Australia and still dream big.
And now, more than ever, people are beginning to notice. If you would like to join the journey or support these amazing talented student athletes, please do not hesitate to reach out.

As we all gather and stand upon Country, may we acknowledge and respect Gumbaynggirr Land and the thousands of years’ worth of both physical and spiritual connection to Country, culture and teachings embedded forever within these Lands.
