Medical Scholarship Recipient

Katie Mason (HSC 2011) is one of two therapists, this year, working in the Mid-North Coast Local Health District who have won the Crestani scholarship. Dr. Chris Crestani was the Chief Radiation Therapist at St Vincent’s Hospital who left this legacy after his death.

Katie explains how much the scholarship will help her to advance their educational studies and research. She says,

“The scholarship has given me the opportunity to attend the Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT) conference in Sydney where I was able to see what other centres in Australia and across the globe are doing covering a wide range of different radiotherapy techniques.”

“It was reassuring to know that the work we do, and the care we provide at our regional centres in Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie is of a high quality, and we should be immensely proud of this.”

Katie intends to publish a medical document on the recent work done with breast treatment and planning. She continues,

“We have been able to reduce the number of times breast patients need to come in for treatment as well as keeping radiation to surrounding tissue as low as possible”.

Congratulations on such a fine and wonderful vocation and scholarship Katie!
