We are delighted to share that Caitlin Walpole has joined Bishop Druitt College (BDC) as our new Aboriginal Education Officer (AEO), having commenced on Tuesday, 22 July.
Working four days per week (Tuesday to Friday inclusive), this exciting appointment represents our continued commitment to providing culturally responsive education and support for all our students, and aligns directly with our strategic intents for 2026 and beyond, which place diversity and inclusion at the heart of our college community.
Caitlin has brought a wealth of experience to our college community as a qualified and experienced teacher across primary, secondary and art education, as well as her background as a Teacher's Aide and AEO. Her professional journey includes valuable roles at both Giingana Gumbaynggirr Freedom School (GGFS) and Saint John Paul College (SJPC), where she developed a deep understanding of the unique educational needs and cultural perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Adding to her educational expertise, Caitlin is also a very talented artist, bringing creative perspectives that will enrich our cultural programs.
A Student-Centered Approach
Caitlin's initial focus will be connecting with our Goori Group students and their families to build meaningful relationships and gain insight into their individual needs and aspirations. Through these connections, she will identify opportunities to provide targeted support that enhances their educational journey and helps them achieve their academic and cultural goals through individualised learning plans.
Curriculum Alignment and Cultural Integration
Working collaboratively with our teaching staff, Caitlin will ensure our curriculum is aligned with the learning requirements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This involves not only academic support but also ensuring that cultural perspectives and ways of knowing are genuinely integrated into our educational programs.
College-Wide Cultural Learning
Beyond supporting individual students, Caitlin will lead innovative initiatives designed to bring enhanced cultural learning opportunities to our entire college community. These programs will help all students, staff, and families develop a deeper connection with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, histories, and contributions.
Supporting College Development
As our college continues to grow and evolve, Caitlin will play a crucial role in supporting our developing needs, ensuring that cultural responsiveness and inclusivity remain at the heart of our educational approach.
We look forward to welcoming Caitlin to our college family and are excited about the positive impact she will have on our students and broader community. Her expertise and passion for Aboriginal education will be invaluable as we continue to create an inclusive learning environment where all students can thrive.
