In an extraordinary display of grit, teamwork, and determination, 60 students and 14 teachers from Bishop Druitt College (BDC) took on one of Australia’s toughest school events, the Kokoda Challenge held in Brisbane on June 7, 2025.
This year, BDC students had a unique opportunity to participate through an elective subject called Perseverance: Prove It. Throughout the term, students studied the inspiring history of the Kokoda Track and undertook rigorous training, often hiking up the steep BDC hill and dedicating weekends to group preparation.
Now in its third year of involvement, Bishop Druitt College has expanded its participation significantly, from just four teams in 2022 to a remarkable 14 teams this year: 11 teams competed in the 30km event, and three teams tackled the challenging 48 km course. Every team successfully completed the challenge, a testament to the commitment and character of both students and staff.
The Kokoda Challenge is far more than a physical test. It honours the bravery and sacrifice of the Australian soldiers who fought on the Kokoda Track in 1942 and embodies values of courage, endurance, mateship, and sacrifice which are values that BDC students carried with them every step of the way.
Reflecting on their experience, students shared the profound impact of the challenge:
“I learned that I am quite capable of anything I put my mind to.”
“I learnt that I could push myself to the limits and I will feel amazing once I've finished the event.”
“That I am capable of anything, it’s just my mind I have to focus on.”
On the day, the event began with a moving dawn service, including the Last Post and a minute’s silence. Students then faced the rugged terrain, overcoming moments of pain, exhaustion, and doubt but never giving up or leaving anyone behind.
In true Kokoda spirit, BDC students also raised an impressive $15,980 for the Kokoda Youth Foundation, supporting disadvantaged young Australians, plus an additional $3,000 to help fund the team’s trip to Brisbane. Special recognition goes to Xavier Carlon (Year 10), who individually raised $1,000, and Team BDC 11, who collectively raised $2,452.
Families have praised the program: “Thank you for everything. The Kokoda teachers are the best in the business! The challenge teaches critically important lessons that can’t be taught in a classroom. It also helps to build lifelong friendships. I support it wholeheartedly,” said a parent of a participant.
Bishop Druitt College is incredibly proud of its students’ perseverance, resilience, and compassion, and deeply grateful to the dedicated teachers who supported them throughout the journey.
The Kokoda Challenge continues to grow as a powerful tradition at BDC inspiring the next generation to push beyond their limits, honour our history, and support others in the true spirit of Kokoda.
